KU Students Take to the Court for Basketball Intramural's
127 years ago the KU basketball team took on their first season ever and became one of the most historical college programs in all of basketball history. The KU basketball program is celebrated by all who enter Allen Fieldhouse bringing the spirit and celebrating the Jayhawks. But it is not just the KU program that is a powerhouse in basketball. Every year 100s of students lace up their shoes to participate in the KU basketball Intramurals hosted by the university's recreation services.
“Basketball is the most popular and competitive league we have here at the rec,” said Josie Petrulis, a staff member of the intramural sports.
The recreational league hosts two different events for all basketball participants, the first season starting February 5th and ending March 6th consisting of womens, mens, and co-rec teams. The second season consisted of the NCAA Tournament Challenge Starting March 20th and then ending with a championship game hosted in Allen Fieldhouse.
The KU intramural sports which has grown over the years provides students with an opportunity to keep active and grow a community around the sport that they all love watching and playing together.
“I play club hockey here and the basketball intramural keeps me active during off season and the competition makes it more fun,” said John Feeney, a participant in the KU basketball intramural sports.
No matter how good or bad the season is for the jayhawks, basketball will always be a fan favorite for all students who attend the University of Kansas. The intramural league is another way students can show their love for the sport. Not only does it keep students active but it also gives them an opportunity to play in a prestigious arena and keeps the spirit of basketball going even after the regular season is over for the Jayhawk program.
“I think it is really cool that you could get the opportunity to play in Allen Fieldhouse. It's a once in a lifetime thing that not many can say they have done,” said Charlie Ludbrook, a player in the KU basketball intramural sports.
While the KU basketball program may not have advanced far in the NCAA tournament this year, the students at KU have had their own chance to win. They’ll have the opportunity to compete in the championship games, with the co-rec and men’s competitive teams playing on April 7th, followed by the women’s, men’s greek, and men’s rec teams on April 8th.
The intramural league is more than just games to these students, it is a place of celebration of the passion and pride that comes with being a Jayhawk basketball fan. The legacy of KU basketball shows not only through the prestigious program but also by the students who carry love for the game and the community that the Jayhawk name provides.
